AMATEUR FOURSOMES 2024

Players were welcomed to a beautiful Gorleston Golf club, but with weather conditions not all that conducive to good scoring. The morning round saw players battle high winds and a few heavy showers on the cliff top. It would have taken all of Alan Henry’s and Peter Revell’s experience and nous to post an excellent (+1) 72 and take the lead at half way. Defending champions Jack Cardy and Will Wright came in soon after with 75 to be 3 shots back which wouldn’t be much with conditions not set to improve.  There were then a few pairs 7 adrift with 79s including Felixstowe pair Sayers and Fosker, county juniors Coffey and Swallow and home team Butcher and Leuty.

By the afternoon we had seen the end of the showers but the wind stayed up and the temperature dropped as the chasing pack set out for Henry and Revell. The lunchtime leaders, albeit solid in the afternoon conditions, posted a +10 (81) meaning that the door was now a jar. Another 79 for Sayers and Fosker wasn’t enough to see them into contention whilst the youngsters Coffey and Swallow couldn’t seem to gain any ground either despite their efforts. Very respectable scores of 77 were posted by Harston and Price along with Talbot and Oakey but that wasn’t quite low enough after the tough morning.

Going about their business quietly though was the home pair of Jack Butcher and Ben Leuty who managed to follow up their 79 with an excellent 73 and propelled themselves into the lead. Now the only pair left on the course that could catch Butcher and Leuty was Cardy and Wright, they had 3 holes left and knew they needed one more birdie to retain their trophy. The Chase ended with a lost ball for our defending champs up the 18th hole handing this years title to Butcher and Leuty. Well done to them.

This years nett prize provided us some great winners and a story to match. Billy Ellis and Tommy Hunt were most likely in bed listening to the rain and wind when they got a phone call asking them to replace a last minute pull out. Not only did they manage to make it to the tee on time but their nett 146 for the day was enough for first prize. Great work chaps.
